About

Like many freelance writers, I followed a crooked career path. I accumulated a wealth of arcane grammar knowledge, which I've subsequently lost, as a book production editor in New York. Learned to take small town abuse as a reporter for and editor of community weeklies in Westchester. Mastered ventriloquism and wood-stove maintenance as a ghostwriter/editor for a climber's memoir during two frosty winters in Maine. Rediscovered a passion for story while earning my MFA in fiction at the University of Washington, where I also taught writing for four years. Figured out how to manage legions of underpaid and difficult freelancers as a managing editor of the Tacoma City Paper, Seattle Magazine, and as editor in chief for AMI, a group of in-flight magazines in Seattle. And when AMI moved to Reno, I joined the ranks of those underpaid and difficult freelancers myself.

I have written profiles, issue pieces, travel stories, essays and news reports for regional and national magazines and newspapers. I am web editor for Bark magazine and a frequent contributor to The Seattle Times, Northwest Home + Garden, and Washington Law & Politics, and the former pets columnist for NWSource.com. My third book, Dog Park Wisdom, was published in May 2008.
